tangle his hand from its grasp of the metal, and he landed back across the tree limb, not entirely clear of the falling wreckage. The body of the plane hit the ground with a shuddering thump, rocked once and settled in an upright position, pinning the lower part of his leg beneath it.

His first cry was involuntary, a protest of the shock and pain of the impact on his bones, and then he shouted in earnest, hoping that he was still close enough to the Appalachian Trail for passing hikers to hear his cries. He doubted that he was that near, however. Surely if he were within a mile of the Trail, someone would have found and reported the wreckage of the plane before now. After a few minutes' shouting, he listened for answering cries and heard nothing but the drone of gnats near his head and far in the distance the screech of a bird.

He felt dizzy. He thought his head must have smacked against the ground as he fell, but he could not focus on that sensation because the pain in his leg was worse. Fighting the spinning in his head, he began to take stock of his situation. He was trapped in a forest gully on a mountainside miles from town, with no means of calling for help, and no one to miss him until Monday. How long did people live in situations like this? At least the weather was warm, so exposure shouldn't be a factor, as long as he could manage without water.

He wondered if his leg was broken. He could still feel, then, anyhow, a dubious blessing considering how much it hurt, but at least he was fairly certain that he wasn't paralyzed. He couldn't get out, though. The
